Four Week Wheel Throwing Course
Week 1 – an introduction to throwing on the wheel, focusing on mastering centring techniques and pulling up walls to craft functional pieces.
Week 2 – students graduate to working with larger clay pieces, building upon the skills acquired in the previous session.
Week 3 – attention turns to trimming and enhancing pieces, learning techniques such as trimming feet and refining leather-hard surfaces. Additionally, students delve into adding handles or carving designs onto their creations.
Week 4 – a session dedicated to glazing. Students have the opportunity to hand-paint their pieces using a diverse selection of Amaco glazes, adding the final touch to their ceramic works.
Eight Week Wheel Throwing Course
Week 1 – an introduction to throwing on the wheel, starting with wedging and then emphasising centring techniques and pulling up cylindrical walls to create functional pieces.
Week 2 – delves further into the foundational aspects of clay, again including wedging, while building upon the skills acquired in the previous session to throw larger bowl-shaped pieces using 600g, 800g, and 1000g balls of clay.
Week 3 – shifts focus to trimming and enhancing pieces, with students learning techniques such as trimming feet and refining leather-hard surfaces. Additionally, they explore adding handles or carving designs onto their creations.
Week 4 – introduction of glazing, providing students with the opportunity to hand-paint their pieces using a diverse selection of Amaco glazes, adding the final touch to their ceramic works.
Week 5 – students advance to working with bats on the wheel to create plates and wider-shaped forms, while also continuing to refine their techniques from previous sessions.
Week 6 – offers an extensive throwing session, where students dedicate themselves to a project for their final throwing session. They will be encouraged to plan their projects in advance, with design inspiration and examples provided to help brainstorm.
Week 7 – continues the exploration of trimming techniques. Advanced trimming techniques and decorative patterns will be introduced to inspire creativity.
Week 8 – concludes the course with another session on glazing, allowing students to put the finishing touches on their creations. The session will include discussions on troubleshooting common glazing issues and tips for achieving desired effects.
